Notre Dame vs Arizona State – College Football Week 11
Notre Dame in Underdog Role at Arizona State This Weekend
By Charles Jay
There are two games in college football this weekend matching up schools who are both in the top ten in the all-important Playoff Rankings. One of those games will take place in Tempe, AZ, as the Arizona State Sun Devils play host to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This game, which will kick off at 3:30 PM ET, will virtually eliminate one of the two teams from national championship consideration.
Notre Dame is coming off a wild game, as BetAnySports customers witnessed them getting a particularly hard time from Navy, which ran for 336 yards and pushed the Fighting Irish to the brink. Notre Dame rallied with 21 points in the fourth quarter to come out with the 49-39 victory. In the process, however, they showed some vulnerability, because they lost a three-touchdown lead prior to that.
Arizona State is coached by Todd Graham, who has always advocated an explosive offensive attack, but the Sun Devils are winning games with defense, which is perhaps a funny thing to say about a team that has given up 62 points to UCLA. In their last three games they have allowed only 36 points, and in their last outing they took care of business against their second nationally -ranked opponent in a three-game span when they beat double-tough Utah 19-16 in overtime.
In both the Associated Press and coaches’ polls, ASU is #11 in the AP poll and 12th in the coaches’ rankings. But in the only national rankings that really means something at the moment – the Playoff Rankings – Arizona State is actually a notch ahead of Notre Dame, at #9.
College football betting line – Notre Dame vs Arizona State – ASU is the slight favorite at home:
- Arizona State Sun Devils -2.5 (-115)
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish +2.5 (-105)
- Over 60 points -110
- Under 60 points -110
A couple of seasons ago, Notre Dame advanced to the BCS championship game principally on the strength of its defense. And this year its stop unit seemed to have a lot of things going in its favor. Over the last three games, however, they have allowed 43, 31 and 39 points. College football bettors might not have said this two years ago, but it is a good thing this team has someone like Everett Golson at the controls. He has really matured as a player after sitting out a year for violations of academic policy, and in each of the last three games, he has thrown for 300 yards and at least three touchdowns.
Arizona State has had a bit of a different dynamic going with his quarterbacks, as recently they welcomed Taylor Kelly back to the lineup. In the two games since he’s returned, Kelly has been serviceable, although some observers think he’s still a little unsure of himself. Against Washington he completed 14 of 25 for 180 yards, though that was not a good barometer because the weather conditions weren’t any good. Last week at home against Utah he was 18 for 32 and 205 yards. Some BetAnySports customers believe he may have to get into a shootout with the Irish.
Actually, if you went by the numbers, Arizona State looks like it would be well-equipped to be involved in such games, as the team has averaged 484 yards on the season, more than any team Notre Dame has faced this year. However, it is hard to tell if the offense has experienced a bit of a downgrade with Kelly still getting over the foot injury that sidelined him for six weeks.
One thing college football bettors know for sure is that Notre Dame will have to go the rest of the way without its leading tackler, linebacker Joe Schmidt, who had to leave the game with Navy after he broke his ankle. Coach Brian Kelly hopes that Nyles Morgan, a true freshman who was one of the most highly-touted recruits in the nation, will be a quick study at the position. If Kelly has a hot hand, that will be an imperative.
