NFL Preview Week 8 – Jets vs Bills
NY Jets Get to See What Harvin Can Do Against Banged-Up Bills
By Charles Jay
The New York Jets actually put forth a very strong effort in their last outing. In fact, they would have probably beaten the New England Patriots had their last-ditch field-goal attempt not been blocked. Is that encouraging enough for them to feel they’re taking some momentum into this Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills? This Buffalo team is rather banged up, but they are on the winning side of the ledger, while the Jets are desperately trying not to say “wait till next year.” Game time for NFL betting action is 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Buffalo beat Minnesota last week in the last seconds on a Sammy Watkins touchdown catch, but they suffered a bit in the process, because they lost offensive players to injury. For the Jets, the 27-25 defeat was certainly frustrating and disappointing, but they were in at every step of the way against New England, which means they have not laid down and rolled over quite yet.
Buffalo is 4-3 straight-up and 3-4 against the football pointspread; New York is 1-6 straight-up, with a 2-5 ledger against the number.
In the NFL betting odds that haven’t posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Jets are favored at home:
New York Jets -3 (-115)
Buffalo Bills +3 (-105)
Over 40.5 points -110
Under 40.5 points -110
What’s kind of interesting for the Jets from that game in New England is the fact that Geno Smith did not turn the ball over. Was that an aberration, or a good sign of things to come? Well, given the fact that he has thrown seven interceptions and fumbled the ball six times (although the Jets recovered four of those), we might opt for the former. However, help came after the game as the Jets made a bold personnel move, acquiring wide receiver and kick returner Percy Harvin from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for draft choices. NFL bettors know by now that Harvin has caused some problems around the Seattle locker room, including an alleged fistfight with fellow wide receiver Golden Tate before the Super Bowl. The deal was sudden and shocking, but the Jets were all too happy to make it, because they could really use the help at the wide receiver spot. And seriously, how much more dysfunctional can Harvin be than most of the Jets’ roster?
He will join Eric Decker, who is currently the top receiver with 323 yards, and Jeremy Kerley, who is averaging just 9.1 yards per catch. Jace Amaro is starting to get more action at the tight end spot, with 27 grabs.
BetAnySports customers are no doubt wondering what Buffalo is going to do at the running back position. They have now lost CJ Spiller for the rest of the year with the collarbone injury, and Fred Jackson, their reliable alternative, will be out for at least two or three weeks with a groin injury. Both of those injuries came in the Minneslta game. Bryce Brown can make up some ground in their place, but he lacks consistency.
Kyle Orton has been, for the most part, a steadier option for the Bills at quarterback than EJ Manuel, although he has more sacks against him; in fact, twice as many, as Manuel had with less attempts. Both of these teams can rush the passer, but we would probably have our money on Smith as far as escapability is concerned.
