2016 NFL Betting Odds – New England Patriots

The New England Patriots (-215) are going to have to improvise a little as they start the 2016 season. Well, “improvise” may not be the accurate word for it, as they have known for a whole that they are forced to go with Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback in place of Tom Brady. Certainly this is not the preferable option for coach Bill Belichick, but you have to remember that he has been down this road before; when Brady went down with an injury he had to go with Matt Cassell, a backup quarterback at USC, and although this team did not make the playoffs that season, they did have a 10-6 finish. What you want to look out for, regardless of who is playing quarterback, is the dynamic that has been re-established by the acquisition of Martellus Bennett, a tight end who can complement Rob Gronkowski in the double-TE setup. Bennett is one of the better pass-catchers at that position, so you could see something similar to what this team had with the ill-fated Aaron Hernandez joining Gronk. Obviously they are looking for a healthier situation at the running back spot, with Dion Lewis coming off an injury, and the offensive line, which wasn’t a huge strength last season, will have to hold up for Garoppolo. Remember that Brady was more savvy and could get rid of the ball quicker. If the Pats could get out of these first four games (against the Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans and Bills) with a 2-2 record, they should be in pretty good shape.

2016 NFL Betting Odds – New York Jets

The New York Jets (+630 at BetAnySports) had a tremendous first season under Todd Bowles, but failed to make the playoffs in the end. Can they close things out better? Most of the off-season controversy surrounded their inability to sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, leaving followers with the prospect of Geno Smith going into camp as the #1 QB. But Fitzpatrick was ultimately signed to a new deal, and that also opens up some questions from observers who wonder whether this career journeyman can duplicate what he was able to do in 2015. His history would indicate that even though the numbers are decent, he is not the kind of guy who can drive his team far into the playoffs. The weapons around him are just fine, and there appears to be an upgrade at the running back spot, where dual-purpose (running-receiving) guy Matt Forte was brought on board. But with someone who has as much mileage on them as Forte does, you have to wonder about when he is going to “hit the wall.”

2016 NFL Betting Odds – Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills (+570 at BetAnySports) finished 9-7 in 2014 and then got rid of coach Doug Marrone, which was admittedly the result of some internal struggles. Coach Rex Ryan came in with a brash attitude and proceeded to go 8-8. Yes, that sounds like a downer, but truth be told, there were some people who were expecting such a thing, given the fact that Ryan did not retain defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who had built one of the league’s most fearsome stop units. So there was some confusion and some disgruntled people, including former All-Pro Mario Williams, who has been shipped out. Now Rex has brought brother Rob in for the defensive coordinator job, which might make things shakier. But at least Rex feels he has addressed the quarterback situation. EJ Manuel didn’t work out, but Tyrod Taylor showed some potential and won a trip to the Pro Bowl. The Bills will run the ball; that’s for certain, and Reggie Bush is now on board to join LeSean McCoy. But running back Karlos Williams, who was suspended for the first four games (violation of the substance abuse policy) came into mini-camp twenty pounds overweight.

2016 NFL Betting Odds – Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins (+825 at BetAnySports) may be counting on some guys with an injury history, such as running back Arian Foster and linebacker Kiko Alonso, but they have added some quality people, like the aforementioned Mario Williams, and they have the potential for one of the more imposing defenses in the league. What it comes down to is, can Ryan Tannehill develop into a legitimate, playoff-level quarterback. Adam Gase is the new head coach, and if you recall, Tannehill was former offensive Mike Sherman’s guy. Sherman was working under Joe Philbin (one of his assistant coaches in Green Bay) and now, of course, Philbin is out the door.
