2016 NFL Betting Lines – Preview of the AFC South
Here are the odds to win the AFC South, as they have been posted at BetAnySports:
- Indianapolis Colts +142
- Houston Texans +203
- Jacksonville Jaguars +325
- Tennessee Titans +1125
2016 NFL Betting Lines – Indianapolis Colts
When looking at the situation regarding the Indianapolis Colts (+142), it may indeed have been a wonder how they were able to stay in the division race for so long without Andrew Luck. But there seemed to be little question that he was having some trouble throwing the ball until he came down with his season-ending injury. Having him healthy is something that makes this team the front-runner in the AFC South once again. The biggest controversy in the off-season involved the status of coach Chuck Pagano, who was said to be a cinch to be out the door, until word came down about a new contract extension. So apparently there is some tranquility in Indianapolis. What they hope they get is a decent running back-by-committee, as Frank Gore showed some signs of wear and tear and has been joined by Robert Turbin and Jordan Todman. Tight end Coby Fleener, Luck’s college teammate and a favored target, left via free agency. How fast can center Ryan Kelly, the first-round draft choice from Alabama, fit in as the anchor of the offensive line? Inquiring minds want to know. One constant – kicker Adam Vinatieri, who appears headed for enshrinement in Canton but at age 43, isn’t through yet.
2016 NFL Betting Lines – Houston Texans
The Houston Texans (+203 at BetAnySports) didn’t necessarily win this division by default; they captured seven of their last nine games to get there. Quarterback Brian Hoyer got them there, but he failed miserably in the playoff game against Kansas City, and the move was made to get Brock Osweiler, who did a credible job as Peyton Manning’s injury replacement in Denver. Osweiler is big and has a strong arm, but you have to really wonder whether he can carry a team on his back. This defense is good, with JJ Watt (17.5 sacks) leading the way, but it’s not what it was in Denver, so Osweiler will have to produce more. Losing Arian Foster was no big deal, as he was often injured, and Lamar Miller (coming from Miami) has fresher legs. Still, there has seemingly always been that search for a second wide receiver, and coach Bill O’Brien hopes that first-round draft pick Will Fuller will fill that vacuum.
2016 NFL Betting Lines – Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars (+325 at BetAnySports) like to look at themselves as a vastly improved bunch, and they better be, or coach Gus Bradley (12-36 record) could find himself out the door. Every attempt was made to upgrade this defense, which was woeful against the pass; six of the seven draft picks went to that side of the ball, including cornerback Jalen Ramsey and linebacker Myles Jack, who could be the steal of the draft if he is able to fully recover from his knee injury. Remember that last year’s #1, Dante Fowler, is back after missing all of last year. The Jags also added DE Malik Jackson and safety Tashaun Gipson as free agents. Running back Chris Ivory teams up with TJ Yeldon. There’s a nice WR duo with Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson. Blake Bortles is breaking out – he was second in the league in TD passes last year but was also picked off 18 times and sacked 51 times. This could be very interesting to watch.
2016 NFL Betting Lines – Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans (+1125 at BetAnySports) will be ground-oriented, and they should be well-equipped, with new acquisitions like DeMarco Murray and Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. As for that other Heisman winner, Marcos Mariota missed some time with an injury but offered a lot of encouragement while he was in there (19 TD passes, 10 INT’s). A number of free agents were signed in the secondary, and that is a good thing, because they had only eleven interceptions last season. Coach Mike Malarkey wasn’t expected by most to remove the “interim” tag; let’s see how long he lasts.
